How to Create ePub eBooks

epub editor and converter If you want to publish your own books or blog in ePUB format, the easiest option is that you compose the text in Word (or Google Docs), save it as an RTF file and then you use Amazon’s Stanza program to convert that document into an ePUB ebook.
Before publishing, you should also use the EpubCheck tool from Adobe to make sure that the markup in your ePUB file is valid after conversion.
Alternatively, you may use the free Calibre program to convert virtually any document format into ePUB in a batch. Calibre is available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. And for editing ePUB files, you should try Sigil – a WYSIWYG editor that also runs on Windows, Linux and Mac and support the.

1. Self-publishing is easy.
Self-publishing a print book is easy. Self-publishing an e-book is even easier.
Since this article is mainly about self-publishing an old-fashioned print book, here's the skinny on what it takes to put together such a book:
You choose a size for your book, format your Word manuscript to fit that size, turn your Word doc into a PDF, create some cover art in Photoshop, turn that into a PDF, and upload it all to the self-publisher of your choice and get a book proof back within a couple of weeks (or sooner) if you succeeded in formatting everything correctly. You can then make changes and swap in new PDFs.
After you officially publish your book, you can make changes to your cover and interior text by submitting new PDFs, though your book will go offline ("out of stock") for a week or two. Companies may charge a fee (around $25-$50) for uploading a new cover or new interior.
Both CreateSpace and Lulu offer good instructions for the DIY crowd and it's not that difficult to come up with an OK-looking book (people's definition of OK will vary).

I didn´t know what Sigil was

SigilWindows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS XIf you read the previous post you notice that they mention Sigil as a "needed" tool. I didn´t know what Sigil was. But it is free... Yes !!

Free, Open source under GPLv3. Currently the only application that can also open and edit EPUB books, instead of just converting from other formats to EPUB. Does not currently support embedding video or audio in EPUB.

After Writting the post

Sorry - out there- after writing the first post I realized that I didn´t mention the E-pub vs. PDF dilemma.

http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Word-Document-to-Epub

If you read the link. You´ll see that both files work as in online readers of different sort. But that epub is the one that work with most. The link also mentioned Calibre with I have mentioned in the previous post.

To make epub get Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/ You could then save the Word doc as rtf and import it into Calibre. Then you can convert it to epub. Sometimes I use Sygil to fix up the Chapter headings. http://code.google.com/p/sigil/
I am pretty sure Sygil will import html; so you instead you could save the doc as html in Word and then open in Sygil and save as epub.

EPUB (short for electronic publication; alternatively capitalized as ePub, ePUB, EPub, or epub, with "EPUB" preferred by the vendor) is a free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). Files have the extension .epub.
EPUB is designed for reflowable content, meaning that an EPUB reader can optimize text for a particular display device. EPUB also supports fixed-layout content. The format is intended as a single format that publishers and conversion houses can use in-house, as well as for distribution and sale. It supersedes the Open eBook standard.

I just added Wikis explanation of epub if you like me don´t know what epub is.

Here is an other explaination  as to the difference

If you don’t have Ms Word 2007, you can ask for a friend of you who has one to use the “save as” function to convert word to PDF file. Usually the converted PDF file quality is gratified except for password setting feature.
For converting Word to ePub documents, I suggest you use a professional ePub Creator. Bcz it can help you to make a standard and fully ePub book publication. Apart from basic conversion from Word, PDF, image, text to ePub files, you can also design book cover and tile, layout, author, chapter…. Found here

Epub vs. PDF

Yesterday I spoke to someone who´s wife was a "real" author and had her books published (online and in print) by a "real" publisher. He recomended Indesign by Adobe. I am at the moment trying it out. He was NOT too keen on PDF because the finish product looked so much better with Indesign.

But here is the dilemma:

  •  PDF can be published quite simple. You create a word or openoffice document.(Remember that some feel Openoffice is far better at transferring hyperlinks and pictures then Word.) Then you make a save-as PDF.
  • The finish product (if as in "How to Write and Publish your own eBook") looks ok - I think close to a "real" book. I didn´t feel or think "what a rip-off". But I did see his wifes ebook in Indesign and it is at least 5 steps above the PDFs and he said that on that IPod or Android all spacing would be lost in PDF but not in Indesign. So ...
  • then you have to send your "product" somewhere.( Amazon or ???). I honestly don´t know where to go IF I want to have the "right" place to go.

Which has left me at "Square- one" again. I am more educated but any wiser.

Adobe InDesign
Adobe Indesign
Adobe InDesignWindows, Mac OS XCommercial license. Exports to EPUB format. Note that versions prior to 5.5 create EPUBs that require significant editing to pass ePubCheck or ePubPreFlight. Plan on using Sigil or studying Liz Castro's EPub Straight to the Point book if you want to make EPUBs using Indesign 5.0.
